And for some reason, this makes them taste better. I’ve been chasing after that rich and nutty vanilla flavor you get from bakery Rice Krispie treats and how to make them so big.

This is the only Rice Krispie recipe you’ll ever need!

What’s the Secret to the Best Rice Krispie Treats?

Two things. Browned butter, which is optional in this recipe, but so good! And, adding some of the marshmallows along with the cereal so you get those gooey globs of melted marshmallow throughout.

Ingredients

  • Butter – You can use salted or unsalted. It doesn’t make a huge difference here.
  • Sweetened condensed milk – This adds another flavor level and gooeyness.
  • Vanilla extract – For flavor
  • Mini marshmallows – You will need a 16-ounce bag, divided
  • Rice Krispie cereal – Yes, you can use an off-brand if you like.

How Do you Make Rice Krispie Treats Soft?

Don’t press the treats into the pan too firmly. It’s only necessary to press enough in order for the treats to fill the entire 9×13 pan, but if you press too firm, it can make your treats hard.

Also, the ratio of marshmallow to cereal is important. In this recipe, we use 16 ounces of mini marshmallows to 9 cups of cereal.

Equipment

  • Dutch oven or large pot
  • 9×13" lightly oiled baking dish
  • Parchment paper

Ingredients

  • 12 tablespoons butter
  • ¾ cup condensed milk sweetened
  • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 10 ounces mini marshmallows for melting
  • 6 ounces mini marshmallows unmelted
  • 9 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Instructions

  • First, brown your butter in your pan or dutch oven. To do this, set stove to medium heat. Melt butter, stirring frequently, until butter is a dark gold/amber color. It should smell nutty and there might be little bits of brown in your butter—that's all good! This step adds lots of flavor but it is optional if you'd rather simply melt the butter.
  • Once the butter is browned (or just melted), add sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. Stir until well combined. Turn down heat to medium-low.
  • Add 10 ounces of mini marshmallows to the pot and stir with your butter/milk mixture until everything is melted and smooth.
  • Add your Rice Krispies and stir until thoroughly combined. If needed, you can also pour the melted marshmallow/butter mixture into a large mixing bowl containing the cereal if you do not have a dutch oven or pot large enough to hold and stir everything together.
  • Then, add the remaining 6 ounces of marshmallows—you want these to keep their shape to add some texture, so be sure the Rice Krispie mixture isn't so hot it will melt your marshmallows.
  • Carefully pour the Rice Krispie mixture into a buttered 9×13 dish. Take a piece of parchment paper and run it over the top of the dish to perfectly smooth out the Rice Krispies.
  • Wait at least an hour until Rice Krispie treats are thoroughly cooled, then cut into desired number of servings. If you want GIANT treats, I think 9 is perfect.

How to Prep for a Spray Tan (and Make It Last)! https://abeautifulmess.com/how-to-prep-for-a-spray-tan-and-make-it-last/ https://abeautifulmess.com/how-to-prep-for-a-spray-tan-and-make-it-last/#comments Thu, 19 Aug 2021 12:40:57 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=74005 Having been a tanning bed regular in my high school years (almost every day at the tanning salon), I’ve been trying to avoid “getting sun” as much as possible as I get older to try and mitigate some of that damage.

Big sun hats, rash guards, etc., are my best friends. BUT, I miss the glow and even skin tone that a tan could give.

I remember getting my first spray tan in maybe 2002? Wow, things have come a long way since then. The orange-tinted nightmare has now become, in some cases, a very convincing substitute for the real deal! So grateful for that.

My favorite kind of tan is an airbrush tan where someone has the spray machine and they do it manually.

Related: Check out our skincare archive for more!

It’s usually not cheap, but proper preparation can have a major effect on how long your spray tan investment lasts. Here is the timeline I follow that’s given the best results:

Five days to 8 hours before your spray tan:

I like to start my exfoliating/hydrating routine about 3-5 days before my spray tan and carry it through until the night before—this way your skin is really optimally exfoliated and moisturized instead of a “last-ditch effort” the night before.

I absolutely love this scrub from First Aid Beauty. I have keratosis pilaris and this really helps with that as well as being a great physical exfoliant.

My favorite “scrubbing” tip is to actually exfoliate in gentle circles—this works just as well as a firm touch. Scrubbing hard is only going to inflame your skin, so be sweet to it.

My custom lotion from Function Of Beauty (use that link for 20% off your first order) is my favorite for quick and easy hydration.

I’ve recently started incorporating dry brushing into my routine again after years of not doing it, and I feel like dry brushing before your shower really helps to exfoliate even further.

Twenty-four to 12 hours before your appointment:

If you wax, wax at least 24 hours before your appointment. I shave, so I normally do that the night before my spray tan—at least 12 hours before.

Day of spray tan:

Take a shower so your skin is clean (remember, do not shave or wax!), and do not put any oil or lotion on your skin afterward. Anything on your skin could lead to the tan not developing correctly or getting streaky/blotchy.

If you’re worried about certain areas being too dry and taking on too much of the tanning solution, your salon should have a special oil-free lotion that you can apply to places like your nail beds and knuckles.

Be sure to wear loose clothing! Anything that rubs against your skin right after your spray tan will disrupt the tan’s development—I even go so far as to not wear a bra because I know that will leave marks.

Avoid sweating after your appointment. I usually wait until I wash off the tan for the first time to exercise or do anything I know will make me really sweaty.

Be sure to wait the appropriate amount of time before showering. Depending on what type of spray tan you get, there will be a period of time you’ll need to wait while the tan fully develops. Your esthetician/tech will tell you this info!

After your spray tan:

Hydrating is going to be key to prolonging the life of your tan—the dryer your skin, the more it’s going to flake off and disrupt your tan. This gradual tanning lotion from Vita Liberata made a spray tan I had last for 12 days—it was incredible and I swear by it!

Obviously, you have to shower, but the more you shower or are in the pool, you are shortening the life of your tan. I find that using a gradual tan lotion like the one above helps so much if you’re on a beach vacation or something where you’re in the water a lot.

I hope this was helpful, and if you have any favorite spray tan prep/maintenance tips, please share them below! xo Keely

10 Things I Love Sunday https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-224/ https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-224/#comments Sun, 08 Aug 2021 13:00:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=73985 Hiii!!! Hope your weekend has been absolutely amazing. We have been taking it easy the past few weeks (on the weekends) and it’s been so nice.

Here’s the inflatable pool we’ve been hanging out in on the weekends— it’s definitely big enough for two adults and you could probably fit 3-4 fully grown people.

Do you enjoy weighted blankets? Or maybe you’ve been intrigued by them but haven’t tried one yet? Let me put you onto weighted eye pillows, which is like a tiny weighted blanket for your eyes. This little pocket of joy is so great for anxiety or racing thoughts at bedtime. I find that the weight of the pillow (filled with flax seeds and lavender) has an almost immediate calming effect and keeps eyes from fluttering. As an added bonus, it filters out almost all light! I use one of these every time I sleep and have for many years now.

It’s been 10 years since I last bought hair extensions and back then I was a VERY dark brunette! My hair color has changed so much, so it was time for a new set. After a lot of research and recommendations, I decided to go with Barefoot Blonde. I love that they send you a pack of your choice of shades to try (comes with a tiny weft of hair for each shade) so that you can really get a perfect match. You can also get matched via Skype, which is so cool! I got the classic set in Sandy Blonde.

Here’s the dress I’m wearing in the photo (I loooove it. So comfy)! Here’s something similar for straight sizes.

And my record player! It’s definitely more of a muted, dusty pink than a blush like it says in the description. The record I’m playing is Britney Baby One More Time (#freebritney), but sadly this pink marbled edition is sold out.

This denim babydoll is on my list! I loveeee the pink color, too.

Verrrrry pretty dress and the short sleeves make it perfect end of summer/start of fall.

The iconic “Mom, I am a rich man” quote tee complete with Cher sketches!!!

BUTTERFLY CLAW CLIPS in tortoise shell colors?! Sign me up! I know a lot of Millennials feel a certain type of way about our fashions being resurrected from the ’90s and Y2K era, but I am so here for it!!! Let me relive those days, haha.

Have an amazing week!!! xo Keely

Keely’s Laundry Room Makeover (and Favorite Cleaning Necessities!) https://abeautifulmess.com/keelys-laundry-room-makeover-and-favorite-cleaning-necessities/ https://abeautifulmess.com/keelys-laundry-room-makeover-and-favorite-cleaning-necessities/#comments Tue, 03 Aug 2021 13:28:11 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=72911 Updating a laundry room might not be the first thing you think about when you think of making your home cleaner, but for us, having a routine and optimized space for everything has been a huge help in working toward that goal. Today, in partnership with The Home Depot, I’m excited to share our updated laundry space as well as some things that have helped make our home happier and cleaner!

Here is what our laundry room looked like before. It wasn’t bad by any means, but it did lack some functionality and personality. The contractor shelves around the perimeter made the space feel very small, so we opted to build some custom shelves (shoutout to my husband Michael, who built and installed the cabinets and shelves) to make things more accessible. We also designated another space as a “linen closet,” so that’s where all the blankets went, if you were wondering!

You can see that we also did a tile backsplash for some extra eye candy. This was our first time tiling alone—in the past, we’ve had help from my parents, so it was a great learning experience, and we’re glad we have a new skill now! We also built a countertop out of birch plywood as a “folding station” and installed it over the top of the Samsung washer and dryer. Speaking of the washer and dryer, I am IN LOVE with this set—it has so many bells and whistles, and makes doing laundry so fun!

The Samsung Smart Dial Washing Machine learns and suggests your favorite laundry cycles based on your day-to-day use, which is so awesome when you’re essentially washing the same items over and over again. So, you can have the perfect cycle for your delicates, bedding, regular wash, and so on. The washer has an extra large 5.0 cubic foot capacity and features CleanGuard antimicrobial technology to prevent odors inside the drum and for added protection on high touch surfaces. Even though we’ve left the door to the washer open on other front-loads we’ve owned to air them out—that musty smell is just so hard to tame, but I can tell a big difference with this washer.

Another thing we’ve incorporated into our routine that we are absolutely loving is the Samsung Jet 70 Cordless Stick Vacuum, which is amazing at keeping pet hair and dander under control. The 5-layer HEPA filtration system traps 99.9% of microdust for cleaner air in your home, which is great for a house full of people with allergies! I love that you can adjust the settings so quickly and easily on the panel at the top of the vacuum. Our bathroom floors are white and show EVERYTHING, and the low setting on the Jet 70 is perfect for whisking away every stray hair and speck of dust before it’s time to mop them. I also love how this vacuum handles rugs—it doesn’t suck the corners and ends under like most vacuums do.

The Cleaning Station for the Jet 70 is totally new-to-me technology. My jaw was on the floor the first time I used it! A lot of the time with stick vacuums, you have to empty out the canister into the trash can and face the wrath of the dust and particles. But the Cleaning Station boasts a digital inverter motor which is energy-efficient to remove all debris from the canister into a vacuum bag immediately upon setting it on the station. While we didn’t mount our charging station on the wall, it has full capabilities for mounting and is a 2-in-1 for charging and holding the vacuum, which is so nice!

Our home definitely feels happier, more functional, and yes, CLEANER! Our previous washer and dryer also found an amazing new home with a family that was in need of a set, which made this project even sweeter. If you have any questions about our makeover or any of the Samsung appliances in the post, please leave your questions down below! xo Keely

10 Things I Love Sunday https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-220/ https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-220/#comments Sun, 11 Jul 2021 13:00:54 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=72989 Sources from photo: SkirtShoesTeeHat (similar)

I’ve been starting to see back-to-school supplies and some fall decor creeping into stores, and I have to say I am so ready for it!!! I tried to embrace summer a little more and while I think I did to an extent, I still can’t contain my excitement for my favorite season. One of the things I did this year to help me really embrace summer was to completely (try to) throw out all instances of “I need to cover up my body because it’s not good enough.” I decided my comfort was the most important thing this summer, and it has made such a huge difference! I’ve been rocking tank bodysuits and shorty shorts and swimsuits and I’ve gotta tell ya, it feels so good to be COMFORTABLE. Just a little pep talk if you’re needing one from a girl who used to refuse to wear anything but jeans in the summer! 🙂 Here are a few things I’ve been loving:

I mentioned on Instagram stories a few weeks ago that I started roller skating. I am really loving it, especially at the rink! Here are the skates I got that I absolutely adore. I was also considering the Moxi Lollys, but these fit my feet perfectly.

These toe guards are the perfect addition to my skates! Who couldn’t use a little pink glitter in their lives?! I went with the rhinestone hardware and got so many compliments at the rink last weekend when I put these on.

My sister got me this customizable bag for my birthday from Daily Disco where she works as a chain stitch embroiderer! I really like everything about it, especially the fact that it’s roomy and has a zip-top.

I just purchased this makeup bag and it’s essentially the mini-version of what the pros use. There are hard dividers that you can move around and customize to your liking. I’m so into having a designated compartment for complexion, eyes, lashes, etc.

This is the best makeup blending sponge I’ve ever used. I saw it on TikTok, had to try it, and I’m so glad I did! It has a velvet texture that gives a beautiful airbrush finish, but it doesn’t soak up a lot of product like my other blenders have done in the past.

Just want to thank the Good & Gather brand for coming out with my favorite flavor of sparkling water EVER.

Snagged this faux fiddle leaf for our laundry room (it’ll be on the blog this week) and it looks amazing. Perfect for any corner or spot that needs a little somethin’!

In love with this mid-century mustard wallpaper. Could be so cute in a kitchen or a garden-themed room.

I’m a sucker for anything pop music, so when I saw this on Netflix, I had to check it out. It’s been very insightful and mostly a fun watch with moments of “Oh shit, i can’t believe that happened.” The Boyz II Men episode was heartbreaking (explores the whitewashing of R&B), the history of autotune blew my mind, and the deep dive into Swedish pop producers and writers was so wild.

This French New Wave-inspired Clueless print is too cute.

Have an AMAZING week ahead!! xo Keely

10 Things I Love Sunday https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-216/ https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-216/#comments Sun, 13 Jun 2021 13:00:10 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=72342 Happy Sunday! I hope your weekend has been amazing. I roller skated for the first time in a VERY long time and we did some landscaping in our front yard—it’s definitely feeling like summer in Nashville. 🙂 Here are some things I’ve been loving lately …

You may or may not remember the super soft sweatpants that I’m absolutely in love with in the colder months (they’re AMAZING) and it looks like Aerie made some boyfriend fit shorts in a similar material! These would be perfect to lounge around in or throw over a swimsuit.

Here’s a wild story: My friend and I got tickets to a Miley Cyrus secret show this past week! It turned out to be the Peacock (NBC’s streaming service) Pride Month special!!! We had the best time and I’m so excited to rewatch the show when it airs on June 25. I wore this rainbow tie-dye bodysuit and it’s quickly become one of my summer staples!

This CLUELESS makeup collection is beyond amazing. I look for talc-free formulas and this brand checks out! I can’t get over the pink furry palette.

These have become my absolute favorite lip products. They are ’90s-style jelly lip glosses and the ingredients list is great! I love the sorbet and the orange shades.

I’ve talked about this one before, but since I got it, I’ve worn this $10 tee a hundred times. It’s great quality and has such a cute shape! Love it with black or jean shorts.

A fun Bowie print I found on Etsy. Could be so cute near a record player setup!

SUCH a cute beach tote and a great size. I love the one with the tassels, too.

I’m such a sucker for anything with tiny fruits on it, and this top is no exception. I love that Abercrombie has started offering more extended sizes on a lot of their items, especially their jeans and shorts.

You know how much I love Megababe and Katie Sturino—she just wrote a book on “How to embrace your body and start living your best life.” I can’t wait to read it!

Here’s a ’90s/2k summer songs playlist! Get jiggy wit it. 😉

Have a lovely week ahead, and thanks for hanging out with me today!

How We Updated Our Planked Wood-Look Tile https://abeautifulmess.com/how-we-updated-our-planked-wood-look-tile/ https://abeautifulmess.com/how-we-updated-our-planked-wood-look-tile/#comments Tue, 01 Jun 2021 12:55:42 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=70478 If you’ve seen our DIY countertops, you know all about our phase 1 makeover for our main bathroom. We plan to fully renovate this space in 2-3 years, and I’m SO GLAD we took on this project! One, because it’s so nice to have a space you absolutely love in the meantime, and two, you can experiment with things that you consider to be a bit of a risk because it’s temporary.

One of the things that we really wanted to update was our wood-look planked tile floor—the above photo shows the floors in their original state. I understand that a lot of people love this type of tile, but I am not one of them (and neither is my husband), so we decided to paint over it and choose a really fun stencil. After doing a lot of research on painted tile, I personally don’t think I would have done this for any kind of long-term solution, just because a lot of accounts I’ve read say that after a year or two, things start to show wear.

Another part of our decision to do the paint is that that since we don’t wear shoes in the house, we could count on there not being shoes on this surface—pretty much bare/sock feet only. My biggest fear was that it wouldn’t look right having to stencil over the grout lines since it’s not square tile/perfectly suited for the stencil, but you really don’t notice them at all now that everything is done.

If you’re curious about how long this project took, I would budget three days. One for prep, one for stenciling/touching up, and one for sealing. The first thing we did was clean the whole floor really thoroughly with Krud Kutter (a degreaser) and tape everything off. Then, we primed with a high adhesion bonding primer. We did three coats of primer, which might be overkill, but we really wanted everything to be thoroughly covered. Just be aware that due to the nature of these kinds of primers, it may not look fully opaque even after a few coats—the purpose is not to cover up what’s underneath, but to make sure the surface is prepped to take and hold onto the paint.

Next up, after the primer dried, we painted three coats of a white latex paint. Our tile was kind of textured, so we really needed all of those coats to make sure everything looked nice and even. The photo above is in between coats 2 and 3, so you can kind of still see the tile peeking through.

Next up came the stenciling! Here’s the stencil we used. I love this company because you can choose the size of the stencil you need for your size of tile (we went with the width of the tile, which I believe was 8″ and decided we would paint over the grout lines if necessary when it comes to length). The other pro of this brand is that they give you two stencils—one to cut up if you need to maneuver around corners and hard-to-reach places, and another to keep intact.

Here are some of my stenciling tips:

-Practice on a piece of cardboard or scrap wood first, as there’s definitely a rhythm to stenciling.
-Don’t be afraid to stencil over grout lines.
-Keep a cloth or towel close by to wipe excess paint off bottom of the stencil so it doesn’t transfer (this will probably still happen but don’t worry, you can touch everything up later).
-Be sure you seal your work! We did three coats of poly and it feels really strong and protected.Hope this is helpful if you decide to tackle a stencil project!

P.S. Here’s a link to a similar bath rug.

Tips to Get The Most Uses Out of Your Foundation (And What to Do When it Breaks) https://abeautifulmess.com/tips-to-get-the-most-uses-out-of-your-foundation-and-what-to-do-when-it-breaks/ https://abeautifulmess.com/tips-to-get-the-most-uses-out-of-your-foundation-and-what-to-do-when-it-breaks/#respond Sat, 29 May 2021 13:00:04 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=71086 Foundation is without a doubt one of the most expensive makeup investments, and one that probably gets used the most—so it’s only natural that we want to make it last as long as possible! Here are some of my favorite tips for getting the most mileage out of your foundation. (Pictured above are some of my favorite foundations, the liquid is Exa Beauty and the powder is Alima Pure.)

Fix what’s broken! We’ve all been there … a perfectly good foundation gets damaged. Maybe your powder compact shattered when you dropped it or maybe something scratched (or dug into) the makeup. Don’t throw it away just yet! There IS a way to fix it, and the secret weapon is isopropyl alcohol. I tried this method out so you can see how it worked out for me and what I might do differently next time.

Simply grab your alcohol bottle and very carefully pour some in your compact. You’ll know right away when you have enough as your makeup will start “healing” before your very eyes.

I used a bobby pin to spread and smooth things out, but I would recommend a small blunt knife or the back of a spoon to smooth it out a little better. However, THIS WORKED!!! I left the lid open for the foundation to dry out and I was so impressed with how it made something broken usable again. If you have a liquid foundation that broke, maybe the bottle shattered, the top broke off, or the pump is broken, try something like this! You can siphon what’s left of the foundation into a new bottle so your precious product isn’t going to waste.

Be sure you aren’t leaving product behind. Every time I get a new foundation it takes me a few applications to figure out just how much I need. Sometimes, we are letting product go to waste by simply using too much of it and it gets washed away from our brushes and sponges. Maybe you need a half pump instead of a full pump, a pea-sized amount instead of a skittle—and this goes for just about any liquid/cream product.

Get everything out of your tube foundation! Are you at the end of a tube of foundation (or any other beauty product!)? Here’s one of my favorite tips: cut it off in the middle and check out how much product is still left in the bottom! You can scoop the product out into a really small container, and if you don’t have one of those, just pop the tube in a small tupperware container in the meantime. You can see above I probably have 5-10 more applications left in this tube that I couldn’t possibly squeeze anything else out of.

Make a tinted moisturizer. Have a liquid product that you need to stretch for a few more days until you can get a new bottle? Squeeze in some sunscreen or your favorite moisturizer to add some more volume to the product. This will dilute the pigment, of course, but it’s better than nothing! Here’s a great sunscreen option.

Here’s to getting every last drop out of that bottle or tube! xo, Keely

10 Things I Love Sunday https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-212/ https://abeautifulmess.com/10-things-i-love-sunday-212/#comments Sun, 16 May 2021 13:00:13 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=71593 I feel like there is so much shifting in life right now. Mostly good things, which I am super grateful for! Just trying to hang on and enjoy the ride, you know? I’ve noticed as more and more of our friends and family are getting vaccinated and we’re getting to see them, I talk SO much when I’m able to see them, haha! It’s just been so long since I’ve really been around anyone other than my husband and my dog and as an extrovert, even I am having a little trouble adjusting to being around people again. Anyway, here are a few things I want to share with you:

Absolutely love these Tevas! I saw them on one of my Instagram faves Janea Brown’s stories (@jnaydaily)—she mentioned they are so comfortable and easy to just rinse off whenever they get dirty, so they are now on my wishlist.

Something that I’ve been on the lookout for, seemingly forever, has finally been found—a new umbrella! I saw this one and fell in love with the neutral, abstract cheetah print (comes in another print, too!). The quality of this baby is so good. My previous umbrella that I had from J.Crew for literally 15 years (!!!) is so similar in function to this one, which makes sense as Madewell is under the J.Crew family of brands, so I have high hopes this one is going to last me quite a while as well. Highly recommend!

I have a new favorite flavor of sparkling water, and it’s this one. I was introduced to it at Elsie’s recently and it’s become my go-to.

Do you sweat? I’m gonna guess probably. SO DO I. I have three things for you that are going to make summer more enjoyable. First up is Body Dust from Megababe. It’s a talc-free powder to keep you dry. I use it mostly for underbust and on the backs of my thighs (not sure why but the backs of my thighs are so sweaty in the summer) and it works so well.

The thing that makes it extra fun is this dust puff! It’s HUGE and soft and wonderful (and pink) and makes application a breeze. The last piece of this holy trinity is Thigh Rescue! I definitely have thigh chafe if I wear a dress in the summertime and half to walk around a lot, but with this product that is a thing of the past—I’ve been using it for a few years now. They even have a mini-stick that’s perfect for your bag. Just be careful—it can melt if left in high heat for too long!

If you’ve never tried a konjac sponge and are looking for a gentle way to cleanse and exfoliate, I would love to recommend this sponge from Honest Beauty (just $8!).

As a ’90s/2k kid, I’ve really had mixed feelings about small sunglasses coming back, but I think I’m finally ready. I love the pink and tea color combo.

Speaking of ’90s/2k fashion, I’m also pumped that bucket hats have made a comeback. This one is on my list because it looks like it provides a lot of shade from the sun—perfect for a pool day.

I’ve been coveting this dress. It’s simple but beautiful! I also love how comfortable it looks and those little ruffle sleeve details are so dainty and sweet. 🙂

Of course, I can’t do a 10 Things without a playlist! Presenting “favorite feel-good songs from the ’90s and 2000s movie scenes.” My cousin sent this to me and it’s too perfect, especially The Parent Trap playlist art!

GORGEOUS mug for under $10! I love to have a little stash of small gifts to give in case a friend needs cheering up or a little boost, and this kind of thing is exactly what I look for. Maggie Stephenson is an amazing artist and I love everything in her Anthro collection.

Happy week ahead!! xo Keely

When To Throw Away Makeup https://abeautifulmess.com/when-to-throw-away-makeu/ https://abeautifulmess.com/when-to-throw-away-makeu/#comments Fri, 23 Apr 2021 12:47:27 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=70291 I so often see TikTok and Instagram memes joking about how products get kept wayyyy after their expiration date (like … years sometimes).

It’s so easy to just leave things in your makeup drawer, especially if they still seem to be performing just fine! Trust me, no judgment here, but I do want to share some ways you can know for sure that it’s time to toss those products.

Check out the PAO symbol on the package

PAO is short for period-after-opening, and it’s represented by a little symbol you can find on a lot of product packaging. Check out the photo above, you’ll see it circled in white. The cool thing about the PAO is it tells you exactly how long the shelf life is on a product once it’s been opened for the first time.

Mascara and eyeliner

Some mascaras will have a PAO symbol or share an expiration date, but a good rule of thumb (if you don’t see any guidance) is to throw it out three to six months after you first open it.

Because of the low moisture content of mascara, it’s not as much of a breeding ground for bacteria that it has long been rumored to be, but you’ll still get dirt and oils accumulating on your brush and in your product which isn’t great since mascara is used near such a sensitive area.

Foundation and concealer

Complexion products typically have a lifespan of a year or so, but there are some definite ways to know when it’s time to say goodbye. For compact/cake foundations and concealers, once they start to crack. For liquid products, once they start to separate, congeal. And for ANY product: if/when they start to smell weird.

Powders (eyeshadow, blush, setting powder)

Properly sanitized (I spritz mine with a little alcohol) powder products can last up to two years.

Lip products

Lipsticks and chapsticks should be tossed after about a year. I really like to stick to this one because of how bacteria can build up, especially in things like tubed lip glosses and liquid lipsticks. You *can* sanitize lipstick. Just take a paper towel and spritz it with alcohol and gently clean off the lipstick.

Beauty Blenders and makeup sponges

Makeup sponges like Beauty Blenders are typically good to go for about three to six months, depending on how you care for them. An easy way to clean your Beauty Blender or makeup sponge is with a solid cleaner; we have a DIY for one here.

If your sponge is stained to the point that no amount of cleaning can help it or you start to see little holes forming, go ahead and toss it.

Makeup brushes

This one is a little less straightforward and has a lot to do with how well you take care of your brushes. It’s widely recommended to wash your brushes at least once a week. Here is a great tutorial to help you out.

Also, the way you store your brushes is also pretty crucial—try storing them in a clean, dry place, bristles up, and not touching too many other brushes to where they’re crowded (they can lose their shape that way). It’s especially important to keep an eye on natural hair brushes as they are susceptible to wearing out more quickly.

If you notice your brush starting to lose a lot of bristles or that it won’t return to its original shape after washing, that’s a good sign that it’s time to retire that brush.

If you haven’t cleaned out in a while, maybe this is your sign to just take an hour and go through your beauty products to see what needs to go and what can stay.

I know it can be sad to throw things away, but here’s what I always think when I do big purges on makeup: I’m reminded that I need a lot less than I think I do, and it gives me the opportunity to repurchase my favorites from small businesses I love and even try some new ones. 🙂 Hope this has been helpful for you!
