Air Fryer Meatballs https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-meatballs/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-meatballs/#comments Thu, 23 Nov 2023 14:01:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=119391 I am obsessed with my air fryer and have shared way too many air fryer recipes on this site already. But, I’m not done because these air fryer meatballs are so delicious and easy and the perfect compliment to a bowl of pasta and red sauce.

This air fryer meatball recipe is pretty simple. These will go will with just about any sauce or gravy you want to serve them with. But, if you want something even more flavorful, try my stuffing meatballs. I also love that when you cook with your air fryer you can see all the liquid fat that drains off as they cook (it will be in the bottom of the air fryer, under the grate). So, this is a lighter option for cooking something delicious that hopefully your whole family will love.

Related: Not sure what to serve these with? Try this easy vodka sauce and any pasta or gnocchi you have on hand.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef, pork or a mix – see notes
  • Italian breadcrumbs
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Garlic
  • Parmesan cheese – the powdery kind is great for this recipe
  • Salt and pepper

If you want to add more spices to this mix, you totally can! Some things to try might be onion powder, cayenne, chili powder, or even Italian seasoning.

Directions

Mince the garlic.

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients. Mix together to create a meatball batter. Use your (clean) hands to form 16 balls, roughly the same size.

Spray your air fryer grate with a little nonstick spray. Then place the meatballs inside.

Air fry at 400°F (204°C) for 12 minutes. The internal temperature should reach 165°F, but you can also cut one open to check that it’s no longer pink inside (a tiny bit of pink is OK, but it should not be raw).

Serve warm with pasta and sauce, gravy and mashed potatoes, or whatever else your heart desires.

Tips & Notes

  • If you want, you can add parchment paper to your air fryer. If you do, for this recipe I would recommend add some slits or holes to the center so the excess fat can drain off to the bottom (under the grate).
  • The outside of these meatballs will be almost crispy, as the air fryer is a great tool for, well, air frying. 🙂 So, these also can make an excellent appetizer. But do take care not to overcook them or they can become dry.
  • I like to use a mix of ground meat for this recipe. I often use “Boston Burger” ground meat, which is 60% beef and 40% pork and pretty common at the grocery store I frequent. But any ground meat can work in this recipe! Just keep in mind if you use a more lean (chicken, turkey) ground meat, the nutrition facts will vary from the ones in my recipe card below.

Air Fryer Fried Chicken https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-fried-chicken/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-fried-chicken/#comments Tue, 12 Sep 2023 13:02:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=116164 Fried chicken is a beloved comfort food that boasts a crispy, golden-brown exterior and tender, juicy interior. Many of my favorite fried chickens have been served in a bucket. 🙂 With the introduction of air fryers, achieving that perfect fried chicken has become healthier and more convenient than ever! If you’re skeptical, trust me, you can make air fryer fried chicken that’s crispy, flavorful, and downright delicious. Find even more air fryer recipes.

Using hot air circulation, air fryers create a crispy outer layer on foods with significantly less oil. This means you can indulge in your favorite fried dishes without excess grease. I also think deep frying at home, while tasty, leaves quite a strong smell in my kitchen afterward. Another reason I love my air fryer!

Ingredients

  • Chicken – if frozen, thaw before following the directions below
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • All-purpose flour
  • Seasoning salt – I use Lawry’s
  • Pepper
  • Olive oil cooking spray – other oil cooking sprays can work too

Directions

Prepare by having a shallow bowl with the flour, salt and pepper set out. Also a shallow bowl with the milk and egg whisked together.

Season the outside of the chicken with seasoning salt. Coat the piece in flour mixture. Then coat it in the milk mixture. Then coat once more in the flour mixture.

Once all the pieces of chicken have been breaded, spray the inside of the air fryer with light coating of cooking spray. Place the chicken pieces inside, careful not to crowd the basket. It’s OK if they touch a little, but don’t overcrowd them as you want the hot air of the air fryer to circulate all around the pieces.

Air fry at 360°F (182°C) for 15 minutes. Pause the air fryer and flip each piece of chicken. As you do, lightly spray them with the cooking oil. Then cook for an additional 5-8 minutes. The chicken should be 165°F (74°C) on the inside when done, it will also be golden brown and crispy.

Tips for Success

  • Legs and thighs are the pieces of chicken I use most often. Other cuts can work well too, but I’ve found breasts aren’t as good with this method. If you use different cuts in one meal, try to use all pieces that weigh similar or else your cook time may need to vary.
  • You can add more spices to the flour mix if you like! Try things like garlic powder, Italian seasoning, or cayenne for a little heat. This recipe is simple and basic (and good!), but you can season it up more if you like.
  • Use chicken with the skin. The skin will hold the breading best. Skinless chicken pieces aren’t great options for this particular recipe.

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-grilled-cheese/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-grilled-cheese/#comments Thu, 24 Aug 2023 13:11:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=116104 Grilled cheese sandwiches are a timeless comfort food loved by all. I mean, there’s a reason grilled cheese is on just about every kid menu out there—it’s about the most simple and comforting meal you can come by. But have you ever considered taking your grilled cheese game to the next level by using an air fryer? Want more air fryer recipes? We have an entire Air Fryer archive for you!

Air fryer grilled cheese has become my own personal “girl dinner” in that this is pretty much what I make for myself after my son goes to bed and I’m tired and just want to watch some TV and chill. It makes almost no dishes and takes less than 10 minutes to make. Winner, winner, grilled cheese dinner!

Related: Want to up your air fryer grilled cheese game? Turn it into a tuna melt by adding my famous deli-style tuna salad.

Ingredients

  • Bread – I love sourdough, but any sliced bread can work
  • Cheese – sharp cheddar is my go-to but any melty cheese you like works
  • Mayo
  • Salt & Pepper

Directions

Add a thin layer of mayo to the outside of both slices of bread. I know, butter is more “normal” but trust me, mayo is best. Vegan mayo also works. Then sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Lay one piece of bread, mayo side down, in the air fryer. Top with a couple slices of cheese. Then add the other slice of bread with the mayo side facing up.

Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 4 minutes. Then pause the air fryer and carefully flip the sandwich over. Continue to air fry for an additional 4 minutes.

Sometimes the top bread will shift off the sandwich during air frying, so if you see this, simply gently push it back in place before flipping. No big deal.

Tips & Variations

  • Don’t skip adding a little salt and pepper to the outside, it really does make a difference. I will sometimes add a few more seasonings like red pepper flakes or everything bagel seasoning if I’m feeling it.
  • Add tuna salad or chicken salad for protein and make this more of meal.
  • I like to add sliced sour apple to grilled cheese if I have it. Trust me, it’s so good!

Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-hard-boiled-eggs/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-hard-boiled-eggs/#comments Sat, 05 Aug 2023 13:38:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=115505 Did you know you can make hard boiled eggs in your air fryer? It’s true! While most people associate air fryers with savory dishes like chicken wings and fries, they can also be used to make perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs.

Find more great recipes in our air fryer archives.

Hard-boiled eggs are a versatile and nutritious snack packed with protein and essential vitamins. I love to add them to salads or a mini cheese plate for an easy dinner, but they are also wonderful as deviled eggs or egg salad. Yum!

Related: You can also make hard boiled eggs in the oven. So many options!

Ingredients & Equipment

  • Eggs
  • My favorite air fryer – it has two baskets

You may also want a bowl and ice to quickly cool the eggs once cooked for peeling.

Directions

Gently place the eggs in a single layer at the bottom of the air fryer basket.

Set the air fryer to 300°F (150°C). Cook the eggs for 12-14 minutes. The cooking time may vary depending on the size of your eggs and how done or soft you want the centers to be.

Once the cooking time is up, immediately transfer the eggs to an ice water bath to stop the cooking process. Fill a bowl with cold water and ice cubes.

Let the eggs sit in the ice water for at least 5 minutes. This step not only helps to cool the eggs but also aids in easy peeling.

Gently tap each egg on a hard surface to crack the shell, then roll it between your hands to loosen the shell. Start peeling from the larger end of the egg where the air pocket is, as it will make peeling easier.

Rinse the peeled eggs under cold water to remove any remaining shell fragments.

Air Fryer Donuts https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-donuts/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-donuts/#comments Wed, 02 Aug 2023 13:04:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=115513 The first time I ever had donuts made from biscuits was at a slumber party in sixth grade. It was the first time I ever stayed up the entire night, and in the morning my friend and I helped her mom make donuts and it was a glorious end to a delirious night. Lol.

Did you know you can make air fryer donuts from canned biscuits? It’s SO easy and the results are delicious!

Traditional deep-fried donuts are undeniably delicious, but they can be a little heavy, and the process makes your whole kitchen smell like grease. Air fryer donuts, on the other hand, provide a lighter alternative without sacrificing taste or texture.

Air fryers circulate hot air around the food, creating a crispy exterior while maintaining a tender and fluffy interior—the perfect combination for homemade donuts!

Ingredients

  • Refrigerated biscuit dough (homestyle or flaky variety)
  • Powdered sugar – also called confectioner’s sugar
  • Milk

These ingredients are to make glazed donuts. If you want ideas for other toppings, keep reading! And here is my favorite air fryer that I’ve had for years and use almost everyday!

Directions

Open the can of refrigerated biscuit dough and separate the individual biscuits. Lay them out on a clean surface or cutting board. Using a small round cookie cutter or the back of a pastry tip (see above), cut out the centers of each biscuit to create the classic donut shape.

Carefully place the donuts in the air fryer basket, making sure they don’t touch each other. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches. Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Air fry the donuts for 6-7 minutes, flipping them two-thirds through so both sides cook.

I find that if I try to flip these halfway through they are still too soft to easily flip. The donuts should be golden brown and puffed up when they’re done.

While the donuts cook, prepare your glaze. Whisk together the powdered sugar and milk. Then once the donuts are cool enough to touch, dip the tops into the glaze then place on a cooling rack. The excess glaze will drip off the sides and down through the rack.

You can also air fry the centers for donut holes if you want!

Other Topping Ideas

  • On top of the glaze you could add sprinkles or chopped up chocolate, other candies, or crushed cookies like Oreos.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the glaze, like pink, for a different look.
  • Mix together granulated white sugar and cinnamon. Then, brush the warm donuts with a little bit of melted butter and sprinkle on the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  • Use the chocolate glaze recipe from this Chocolate Baked Donuts post.

Air Fryer Zucchini https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-zucchini/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-zucchini/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=114787 If you’re looking for a creative way to use up some of that summer zucchini, air fryer zucchini is the perfect solution.

This simple side dish combines the convenience and crispiness of an air fryer.

Let’s dive into the steps to achieve perfectly crispy and delicious air fryer zucchini every time. Or, check out all our air fryer recipes.

Related: Needing to use up summer zucchini? Try our Easy Zucchini Bread Recipe. It’s so good! Perfect for dessert or a sweeter breakfast option.

Ingredients

I like to sprinkle on some grated Parmesan cheese before serving, but this is optional.

Directions

To ensure the best results, choose fresh and firm zucchinis. Wash the zucchini thoroughly under cold water and pat them dry.

Slice the zucchini into thin, even pieces. Aim for slices that are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. This thickness allows the zucchini to cook evenly and become crispy without turning mushy.

Place the sliced zucchini in a large mixing bowl and drizzle with olive oil to lightly coat the slices.

Toss the zucchini to ensure each slice is evenly coated with the oil. Then, toss in the bread crumbs and season with salt and pepper.

Arrange the seasoned zucchini pieces in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this can lead to uneven cooking. If necessary, cook the zucchini in batches.

Air fry the zucchini at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. I usually just shake the air fryer basket well so all the pieces move around and don’t stick to the basket or each other.

The exact cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the slices and the efficiency of your air fryer.

Serve warm and sprinkle on some grated Parmesan cheese if using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to peel zucchini before cooking?

No. Zucchini skin is edible and softens much more than potato skins when cooked, so there is no need to peel zucchini before cooking.

Why is my zucchini soggy?

If your zucchini is soggy, it may not have cooked long enough. Try adding a few more minutes to the overall cook time. You may also have cut your pieces too large if they are still soggy or spongy in the center.

Is zucchini good for you?

Yes. Zucchini is a soft, mild tasting fruit with an array of vitamins and minerals. Zucchini can be eaten raw or cooked.

Making air fryer zucchini is a fun and easy way to enjoy a healthy and flavorful snack or side dish. With just a few simple steps, you can achieve perfectly crispy and delicious zucchini that will be a hit among family and friends. Happy air frying!

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 2 zucchini
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons bread crumbs Italian
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  • To ensure the best results, choose fresh and firm zucchinis. Wash the zucchini thoroughly under cold water and pat them dry.
  • Slice the zucchini into thin, even pieces. Aim for slices that are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  • Place the sliced zucchini in a large mixing bowl and drizzle with olive oil to lightly coat the slices.
  • Toss the zucchini to ensure each slice is evenly coated with the oil. Then, toss in the bread crumbs and season with salt and pepper.
  • Arrange the seasoned zucchini pieces in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this can lead to uneven cooking. If necessary, cook the zucchini in batches.
  • Air fry the zucchini at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. I usually just shake the air fryer basket well, so all the pieces move around and don’t stick to the basket or each other.

Notes

  • The thickness you cut the zucchini to allows it to cook evenly and become crispy without turning mushy.
  • I like to sprinkle on some grated Parmesan cheese before serving, but this is optional.

This remarkable kitchen appliance can transform ordinary fish fillets into crispy, golden perfection without the need for excessive oil or the hassle of deep frying.

Here’s how to make restaurant-quality air fryer fish that your whole family will love.

You can use this basic recipe to make all kinds of air fryer fish and adjust the cook time slightly for thicker cuts. I most often make air fryer tilapia with this recipe.

Ingredients

If you can’t find Italian bread crumbs, simple mix 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs with 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning. You can add other spices (like cayenne) to add more flavor or heat.

Directions

Begin by patting the fillets dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. This step is essential, as it helps the coating adhere better to the fish. Season the fillets with salt and pepper.

Coat the filets in a thin layer of oil and then gently press into the bread crumbs. Do this on both sides so the entire fillet is well coated.

Brush the air fryer grate with a little oil. Place the coated fish fillets in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they don’t overlap.

Air fry at 390°F (199°C) for 12-15 minutes. Halfway through, gently flip the fish fillets to ensure they don’t stick and all sides get cooked well.

Serve warm with a fresh lemon wedge.

You can add more spices (like paprika or garlic powder) if you like. Also, if you have any fresh herbs like chives or cilantro, this can add a nice pop of green and more flavor, but it’s not necessary.

Start by washing and peeling the sweet potatoes. Ensure they are dry before moving on to the next step.

Cut the sweet potatoes into long, thin strips, resembling the shape of fries. Make sure the strips are relatively uniform in size to ensure even cooking.

Place the sweet potato fries in a large bowl and drizzle them with olive oil. Toss the fries gently to coat them evenly. Then, season with salt and pepper and any other spices you want to use.

Arrange the seasoned sweet potato fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket to allow proper airflow and crispy results.

Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 14-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time. This ensures that the fries cook evenly on all sides and achieve a crispy exterior.

Air Fryer Green Beans https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-green-beans/ https://abeautifulmess.com/air-fryer-green-beans/#respond Tue, 11 Jul 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=112921 When it comes to healthy and delicious side dishes, green beans often take a back seat to other vegetables. Unless we’re talking green bean casserole, lol.

However, when you cook them in an air fryer, they transform into a crunchy and flavorful treat that will make you reconsider. Air fried green beans are not only incredibly easy to make, but they also retain their vibrant color and nutritional value.

While I usually keep air fryer green beans simple, seasoning with salt and adding a little lemon juice before serving, there are many ways to dress these up! Try adding some garlic and soy sauce, or ginger and chile crunch sauce.

Ingredients

  • Green beans
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Lemon

Directions

Wash the green beans thoroughly and trim off the ends. If the beans are particularly long, you can also cut them in half for easier handling and even cooking.

Ensure that the green beans are completely dry before proceeding to the next step, as excess moisture can hinder the crispy texture.

In a bowl, toss the green beans in the oil so they all get coated. Then, generously sprinkle some salt and pepper over them, again making sure all green beans get seasoned.

Spread them out in a single layer to ensure even cooking. It’s essential not to overcrowd the basket, as this can lead to uneven cooking and soggy results. If necessary, cook the green beans in batches.

Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8 minutes, shaking the basket in the middle of the cook time to rotate the green beans so they cook evenly.

Once the green beans are cooked to perfection, remove them from the air fryer. Allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving to ensure maximum crispiness. Then, squeeze a little lemon juice over the top before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to parboil green beans before air frying?

No. You can parboil (partially cook in boiling water) before air frying if you want a softer texture on the inside but still a crispy exterior. But it’s not necessary.

Are green beans good for you?

Yes, green beans are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants plus a natural source of fiber.

What should I serve with air fryer green beans?

I would try broiled steak, baked chicken, or air fryer steak.

Air fryer green beans are a fantastic alternative to traditional fried snacks, offering a healthier and equally delicious option. With just a few simple steps, you can achieve crispy, flavorful green beans that will have you reaching for seconds!
